The container terminal investment completed at Port of Rauma
The container terminal investment, started in 2016, has been completed on Feb 5th, 2018. During the investment the existing container terminal was expanded, a new container berth along with new yard area for container storage was built.
The investment was started on April 1st, 2016 and the main contractor was Destia Ltd. A total of four hectares of new container yard was built during the project. The new container berth is approx. 520 m long with a maximum draft of 12 m. The job also included dredging part of the bulk berth to a maximum draft of 12 m. The official notice of the new draft on the bulk berth will be sent out separately on a notice to mariners in the near future.
The complete cost of the investment was approx. 25 million euros.
The expansion of the container terminal was conducted simultaneously with the dredging of the Rihtniemi channel to 12 meter draft. Both investments supported each other and now after completion the competitiveness of Port of Rauma will increase significantly. The port can receive even larger vessels due to deeper channel and berths, the efficiency of transportation will increase on both export and import, and at the same time the emissions from traffic will reduce. The capacity of the container terminal is now almost doubled, and the efficiency improves significantly.
